Blackstone River Theatre offers beginner and advanced beginner eight-week Irish step dancing classes for adults (16 and up) taught by dancer/instructor Kieran Jordan, and beginner hard shoe class. Each class includes thorough stretches and warm-up exercises, with step dancing technique and lively choreography that you can do at sessions, ceilis, festivals or in your own living room!
As part of the Heritage Arts Studio, Blackstone River Theatre plans to pursue arts education outreach into the local community by offering classes and workshops at the theatre with respected performers and teachers. This school for the traditional arts will allow the community to discover or reconnect with traditional art forms (music, song, dance, storytelling, drama and literary arts, as well as new art representing Blackstone Valley themes) and become participants in and not just audience for our regional arts heritage. The first of these class offerings was adult beginners Irish step dancing class with step dancer/instructor Kieran Jordan. Along with teaching the actual dances, instructor Kieran Jordan provided historical background and her extensive knowledge of Irish music, dance and folklore, enabling students to more fully appreciate step dancing and its context within Irish culture. Students learned the history of Irish step dancing and discovered how the dance has developed from seannos and traditional styles to modern and contemporary styles. Students learned to distinguish reels, jigs, hornpipes, and slip jigs (the different types of dance tunes) and were exposed to wonderful recordings of Irish music. Costumes, competitions, the Riverdance phenomenon, hard shoe vs. soft shoes styles and solo dances vs. ceili and set dances were discussed and explored.

Doug Victor lives in RI but travels all over the country teaching Creative Movement workshops. He is only able to offer workshops in Rhode Island two or three times a year.

Dance Theatre of RI was founded in 1989 and Dance Theatre's Competition Troupe started in 1993. They have taken top honors at Regional and National competitions. Most recently winning the Junior Title at the On Stage America 2001 Awards for Best Choreography in the Junior Division. The students have appeared on NBC's Showtime At The APOLLO and have performed for many National charitable organizations. Director, Jennifer Morley was also the Lead Choreographer for the Rhode Island State Olympics Opening Ceremonies where her students performed at McCoy Stadium in July 2001. Her love of dance and children has kept her students motivated and dedicated throughout the years. The studio is run by love and teamwork, creating a very strong family environment.

Specifically for little ones ages 3 to 6, this program brings together creative movement, painting, costume creation, music and an informal performance.

Each class starts with a fun warm-up and dancing to all different types of music. We explore movements together based on different creatures, real and imagined, that we turn ourselves into with our magic wands. Mischievous elves, unicorns, flying fish and slow, patient snails are among the creatures we become. Then after a short snack break, we take out the paint brushes create a backdrop and our own t-shirt costumes.

Class size is limited, please register before June 1, 2007.

Fee: $150.00 includes all instruction, costume and set painting materials and snacks.

Classes include tap, jazz, and ballet all in one for kids and teenagers, as well as a pointe class for more advanced students. EXCITE! Dance Company competes across the country at dance competitions. There is a senior company (min. age 12), junior company (min. age 11) and a company 3 (min. age 11). A training class is available for kids 11 and older, so they can train for tryouts and the higher companies. The school also offers birthday parties with dance lessons.
