Help tip the scales in 2005 towards Peace Peace Dancing promotes a peaceful heart within the framework of community which is the beginning of a peace filled world. | |
| Dance has long been used to express, enhance and transmute religious, spiritual or metaphysical feelings. Dance of all styles from shaker dances to swing to raves can take the participant to a wonderful place of harmony and excitement, as can performance dance for the observer. William James in his book, The Varieties of Religious Experience, quoted Horace Fletcher on the qualities attained through Buddhist discipline, "All at once the whole world has turned good to me. I have become, as it were, sensitive only to the rays of good." Many dancers would recognize this state of being and have attained it, at least, on occasion. Sacred dance is used specifically for the goal of coming into contact with and entering into this radiant place. | Sacred dance evolved from an intertwining of Eastern and Western influences, and Rhode Island has developed a thriving community of people who express and divine their religion, faith, and spirit through dance. Most sacred dances are open to anyone and the principles are taught during the dance or the dance is formatted as a class. See RiDance's New Age Page for New Age and Eastern influenced dance forms which may be used more for exercise and joy of movement. Traditional oriental and middle eastern dance can be found on riDance's Arabic and Oriental Dance page. |
