Island Moving Co
Choreographers Competition 2008
Newport RI
Information: 401.847.4470
Website: http://www.islandmovingco.org
Application Fee: $50.00
Deadline: May 15, 2008

Island Moving Company, Newport's resident dance company, announces its second Choreographers Competition, to choose a work to be commissioned for the Company's 2009 season.

The Company seeks submissions from choreographers interested in creating a new dance work for the Company in the 2009 season. The Company’s nine dancers are classically trained but the repertoire includes modern and post modern works by choreographers such as Colin Connor, Daniel McCusker, Noemie Lafrance, Tami Stronach and Scott Putman.

Submissions, which must be postmarked by May 15, 2008, will include a video of two distinct dances, a resume and a short description of the works and their relation to the choreographer’s work. There is a $50 application fee.

Three choreographers will be chosen to come to Newport and work with the IMC dancers for one week in the fall of 2008. Each week will culminate with a work-in-progress public showing. Choreographers will be offered a $1000 fee plus per diem and accommodations while in Newport. At the conclusion of the three weeks, one choreographer will be chosen to return to Newport in the spring of 2009 to create a new work for the Company.

The Company's previous Choreographers Competition, which was also supported by the Rhode Island Foundation, attracted more than 65 submissions from around the world. North Carolina choreographer Rick McCullough was chosen to create his With Elegant Shades of Decorum for the Company, which premiered in New York in 2002. Other semi-finalists were Julia Gleich and Scott Putman.
