  The fiery flamenco family comprised of Ramon de los Reyes and his two sons, Isaac de los Reyes, and Nino de los Reyes, takes the Carriage House by storm on March 21st and 22nd. This Boston/Madrid dance troupe has performed all over Europe, North, Central and South America leaving audiences breathless. An all-male dance troupe may be non-traditional but they are nonetheless riveting to experience. With three dancers and five musicians (flown in directly from Madrid) the show is richly presented as a true interpretation of the artistry and ardor of flamenco. Hailed as a new dynasty in flamenco, the company performs with a passion that is as forceful as it is authentic.

Charlie Chaplin, the master of improv, has served as the inspiration for a new improvisational movement work titled The Silent Type. The RIC Dance Company will make an appearance on this program performing Vessella's Give Me One Reason. Also, appearing in the program will be the Providence College Dance Company performing Bi-Polar a rhythm jazz and tap piece choreographed by Vessella.

  Highlights will include a presentation of Geoff Adams' portrait, produced in 2000 for the PBS series Zoom, of Juan and Jermaine Ellis, the 12 year old whose murder last year prompted conversations on violence in Providence. The evening will also feature a short video about Morocco by Laura Colella and a mock-newsreel entitled Creature Infiltration by Big Nazo and the RISD Creature Crew. Videos by other up and coming local artists will bring to the mix claymation, a horror movie spoof, and a humorous look at friends' straight weddings through the eyes of a young queer woman. The Everett Dance Theatre teen artists will also be showcasing some of their new collaborative video work.

  Jazzzing the Crossroads is a praise song of music, dance, and word, reconnecting siblings of the African Diaspora: Haiti, Brasil, Cuba, and the U.S. The rhythms of Haitian Voodoo, Brazilian Candomble, Cuban Santeria, and African American Jazz carry roots of contemporary family realities. Kalfou is Brown University's Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble and features dance by Lynnette Freeman and Isabelle Kalubi, spoken word by Daveed Diggs and Jana Willinger and fuses these musical traditions, exploring spiritual struggles that prevent compassion and recognition; healing violent ruptures of dispersion, of Middle Passage, of familial loss, of continued daily assaults upon living African traditions in the New World. In a time of uncertainty and loss, Jazzzing the Crossroads envelopes the audience in a re/encounter of kinship and jubilation.

  This event is a hybrid, combining dance, theater and visual art. The performance event takes place in four seperate installations in the main gallery. Like an art gallery the viewer shifts to different vantage points for each installation; unlike an art gallery, seating is available. The audience enters through a 25 foot tunnel of translucent material and settles in to watch the already-in-progress first section, Curious Ceremonies. This duet is a mesmerizing landscape of slow motion shifting shapes. A section entitled TableDances is a series of solos and duets that creates a familiar yet unsettling landscape. The final section, Sleeping Light takes place in the tunnel which is lit from within. After the performance a gallery talk with director Beth Easterly will be held downstairs in the Frederick Douglass Gallery. Introductory remarks will be followed by a question and answer period with the performers joining in. This is a unique opportunity to hear these artists talk about their work. Light refreshment will be served.

  Obie winner, Marty Pottenger's Abundance is a multi-media theater piece that explores our economic system and equity by beginning with the questions, 'What is enough?' and 'What is enough for you?' Marty was inspired to create this piece after reading the amounts of money that US citizens spend on things - movies, Cheetos, lipstick, Q-tips, Nikes, straw hats...
  For three years, Marty researched consumption, class, markets, greed, generosity and integrity. She interviewed over 400 people - billionaires, professors, minimum wage workers, and welfare recipients. Marty found that, 'We as a society are perpetuating a very understandable sort of social apartheid, by associating with people from similar economic circumstances and by making sure to not speak about economics to anyone else.' Marty comes out of her process believing in the do-ability of achieving workable economic justice.

  The Drepung Gomang monks have put together a varied, fast-moving pageant that provides a fascinating and warm glimpse into the culture of both ancient and modern Tibet. The pageant features harmonic overtone chanting of traditional prayers, accompanied by temple instruments including horns, flutes, bells, and drums. Delicate hand gestures and other offerings accompany the rituals and multiphonic singing (each monk chants a chord of three notes). Translations of the chants into English will be available on the printed program. Also, the monks will perform three dances: a sacred religious dance, an ancient village dance that has been performed for centuries in Tibet at the celebration of various festivals, and the ever-popular Yak Dance. The dances are done in richly brocaded costumes. The written and oral narration accompanying each dance explains its purpose and meaning. Following the chanting and the dancing, the Geshe will give a teaching on a topic that reveals the essence of Buddhist philosophy. At its conclusion, there will be a slide/transparency presentation of scenes from Tibet and from Gomang Monastery. The two-hour Cultural Pageant will conclude with a discussion period so that the audience can ask questions about the culture and religion of Tibet. The funds raised are going to establish a Food Foundation, so they are looking for the tour to be a spiritual, cultural and political success and also a financial benefit for the monastery and its refugees.

  Dance Prism, founded by Scott Ranagan and Mary Demaso, has performed throughout New England since 1982 and will present its 21th annual production of The Nutcracker at the Margaret L Jackson Arts Center in Fall River. This version of the Nutcracker brings to the stage a full spectrum of magical wonders for which the ballet is cherished: falling snow, a growing Christmas tree, a reindeer-drawn sleigh, and angels floating on billowing clouds. It features a cast of 140 performers from five states, including both the company's professional dancers and a cadre of talented children that tour with the troupe.   Featured in the concert are two pieces choreographed by students. The first uses eight dancers to examine educational process utilizing books as props. The second by senior Stacy Heman, of Hingham, Massachusetts, uses twelve dancers and explores the power of eccentric and idiosyncratic movement.
  
  Also included in the show is choreography by guest artists Sean Curran and Melody Ruffin Ward. Curran has had a long association with the Roger Williams University dance program, first as a student, and over the past eight years as a guest choreographer, performer and teacher. Curran made his mark in the dance world as a principle dancer with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. He was an original member of the Off-Broadway percussion extravaganza Stomp. Recent projects include choreographing the Broadway musical play James Joyce's The Dead.
  
  Curran and Ward's piece for the Roger Williams Dance Theatre was created as part of a shared residency with Rhode Island College funded in part by a National College Choreography Initiative Grant from DANCE/USA.
  
  Also presented will be a piece choreographed by Roger Williams' newest dance faculty member France Hunter. Hunter was a member of Twyla Tharp's Company, appeared in the film version of Hair choreographed by Tharp, and appeared in the Broadway revival of West Side Story directed by Jerome Robbins.
  
  Works by Roger Williams faculty members Kelli Wicke Davis, Elizabeth Spatz, and Gary Shore also will be included.

  Boston's newest holiday tradition, BalletRox' Urban Nutcracker celebrates the city's diversity, unites people and communities, and provides new opportunities to dancers of all skill levels and backgrounds. Created by BalletRox founder and artistic director Anthony Williams, Urban Nutcracker is a collage of classical and contemporary dance, including ballet, hip-hop, urban tap, swing and more. Paced by a Duke Ellington infused Tchaikovsky score, the production largely follows the story line of E.T.A. Hoffman s 19th century fairytale, but departs from it by setting the story in a contemporary urban setting.
  
  As in 2002, this year's cast will be led by principal dancers from the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH). Most notable among them are Ramon Thielen as Cavalier. Marisa Soltis will dance the role of Sugar Plum Fairy. Rounding out the cast are a corps of aspiring young professionals drawn from local dance schools and companies as well as from prestigious schools such as Juilliard and the Boston Conservatory. Also appearing are more than 40 children who together reflect the rich spirit and potential of Boston's varied communities. Among the new things audiences will find in the 2003 production are breakdancing and acapella 50's doo wop.
