MAY 2006 JUNE 2006 JUNE 16&17, 2006 FIRSTWORKS KIDS INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL DANCE & MOVEMENT PERFORMANCES Downtown Providence & RISD Auditorium Website: http://www.firstworksri.com Price: FREE!!!! Chinese acrobats, Mexican musicians, and Japanese drummers join RI's Big Nazo and others at FirstWorksKids Festival on Father's Day Weekend The 3rd annual FirstWorksKids Festival is headlined by Sones de Mexico, the joyous band busily reinventing son, a vibrant style of Mexican folk music, and the astonishing 13-member Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats. It will also bring a whirlwind of musicians, puppeteers, storytellers, and dancers to Providence's vibrant downtown, allowing everyone in the family to experience the art of what's fun. All FirstWorksKids Festival events are free. Festivities kick off Friday night with a free hands-on puppet-making workshop with New York's Arm-of-the-Sea Theater at the Providence Children's Museum. Saturday brings with it a feast for the eyes, ears, and mind, with indoor and outdoor activities and five stages bursting with creativity. Saturday FirstWorksKids Festival highlights include: * The sweet sounds of Ugandan musician Samite, about whom Joseph Shabalala (of Ladysmith Black Mambazo fame) said, “When you hear the music of Samite, the soul of Africa is revealed to you." * Puppets, puppets, and more puppets: Arm-of-the-Sea Theater will bring to life luscious, larger-than-life puppets in their show At the Turning of the Tide, which reveals the inner life of a river, before their enormous 18-foot fish puppet leads the rollicking FirstWorksKids River Procession to Waterfront Park. Puppetkabob Productions will delight children young and old with Under Night Sky, an evocative shadow-puppet performance, and Providence favorite Big Nazo will make merry along the procession route and in workshops throughout the day. * The FirstWorksKids Rising Stars Showcase—young musicians, dancers, and other talented young performers representing the spectrum of ethnic traditions from Providence and its surrounding areas. Armenian and Liberian children's choruses, youths from the Chinese Folk Art Workshop, and Off the Curb, Newport's hip-hop dance troupe, are among the many groups that will be featured. * A hands-on children's bookmaking workshop at the RISD Museum focusing on its popular exhibition all about the classic children's book Goodnight, Moon. * Dramatic and delightful surprises along the River Walkway between Market Square and Waterplace Park, from Chinese dragon dances and Tropical Gems' happy and festive steel drums to Odaiko New England’s electrifying Japanese taiko drums and the wacky What Cheer? Marching Brigade. * The Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats will give three wow!-inspiring performances Saturday. And fellow headliners Sones de Mexico will appear Saturday evening in Waterplace Park for a Family Fandango dance fiesta concert that will have everyone on their feet and celebrating. Following the concert is the lighting of Waterfire, a series of beautiful and aromatic fires set along Providence's downtown riverfront. Founded in 2004, FirstWorksKids—like its sister festival, FirstWorksProv—is hailed for its innovative programming and its anything-but-ordinary approach. Last year’s festival-goers were delighted by The Frog Bride, David Gonzalez's magical multimedia retelling of the classic Russian folk tale that has gone on to a Broadway run at New York's famous New Victory Theater. Percussionist Donald Knaack thrilled FirstWorksKids crowds in 2004 and 2005 with his JunkJam musical stylings on brake drums, saw blades, wine bottles, and other sorts of junk. And this year's program offers children and their families even more reasons to experience 'the art of what's fun'. Founded in 2004, FirstWorks is a non-profit organization dedicated to artistic excellence, affordable programming, and community outreach through its two festivals, FirstWorksKids and FirstWorksProv. This year's FirstWorksProv Festival will feature programming from Sept. 29 to Nov. 4, with highlights including STREB and Kronos Quartet's epic Sun Rings. More information about FirstWorks, its festivals, and related hotel packages, can be found at www.firstworksprov.org (not updated as of April 11, 2006) or by calling 401-421-4278.
