The Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company returns to Rhode Island College after their successful 2001 performance. International performance artist Michael Moschen returns by popular demand with a new show suitable for all ages. He is a juggler, but moves with the deftness of a French mime, and his work has an awesome effect of magic. Colleagues and critics have labeled him an illusionist, a movement artist, an animator of objects and a dancerphysicist. You can decide for yourself.

Using live, original music, chant, dance, and a highly theatrical treatment of text emphasizing contemporary speech, The Classical Theatre of Harlem has created a vital, present tense re-telling of Euripides' Greek tragedy, MEDEA. The resulting production uncovers the dark, pagan face of the play and shows that civilizations in the past 2,500 years have only placed a mask on human nature, not changed it.

RIC Theatre Alumna Paula Ewin portrays the indomitable Katharine Hepburn in Matthew Lombardo's one-woman play TEA AT FIVE. Ewin depicts the strident, 31-year old star, still defiant even though she's been dubbed 'box office poison, and later, the 76-year-old, aging actress reflecting on a life filled with loss. The play captures the emotional highs and lows of the inimitable, gravelly-voiced icon of American stage and screen.

Rhode Island school children will be treated to the RIC Dance Company's Annual Mini-Concert Series. Repertory selections will include works by Arthur Aviles (Bronx, NY), Billbob Brown (UMASS Amherst), and Chris Elam (NYC), and rehearsal direction will be provided by Angelica Vessella. Offered free to all school children in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts since the 1960's, these concerts provide young audiences with an informative and enjoyable introduction to contemporary dance forms.

Chris Elam's Misnomer Dance Theater is perhaps the newest and freshest voice of the last decade. Founded in 1998, Misnomer Dance Theatre is all about innovation, new forms, hybrid vocabularies, and articulating a vision of the human and its speech acts that can be unfamiliar, strangely beautiful, and always intriguing. Chris Elam has created a new work for RIC dancers and his company will perform with the RIC dance company.

Phoenix Rising: Steppin' Out for Providence Ballet continues RIC's Rhode Island Dances Series with a showcase of dance artists and companies in a benefit concert for Eva Marie Pacheco's Providence Ballet. Opened in 1995 in the Downcity section of Providence, Providence Ballet's studio was completely destroyed when the 151 Weybosset Street building went up in flames on May 22, 2005.

The dance community's response to Providence Ballet's tragic loss was quick and far reaching. In addition to offers of studio space, costumes, and other essentials, the following artists and organizations have agreed to perform in the Steppin' Out for Providence Ballet showcase: Andary Dance, carolsomersDANCE, Colleen Cavanaugh, Everett Dance Theatre, Festival Ballet, Heidi Henderson/elephant jane dance, Island Moving Company, Providence Ballet, and Spindle City Ballet.

Shannon Hummel's Cora Dance is best known for poignantly drawn narratives and exceptional dancer/actors. Combining exploration of the human condition and relationships with movement and gesture that resonates with truth and honesty, The New York Times has described Hummel as "...the modern-dance version of an eloquent short-story writer." Ms. Hummel will create a new work for RIC dancers in November and return with her company for a RIC Dance Company/Cora Dance shared performance. Ms. Hummel has a RIC connection with previous NYC collaborations with Fernando Maneca (B.A. '87), and Fernando's wife, Vanessa Adato, is a performer with Cora Dance.

About the choreographer : Chris Elam graduated magna cum laude from Brown University and received his MFA in Dance from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Since founding Misnomer Dance Theater his work has been performed in over 100 theaters across the USA, Cuba, Brazil, Indonesia, and Turkey. Elam's work has met critical acclaim including a featured article in Dance Magazine, interviews in The New Yorker and The New York Times, and reviews in numerous publications. Elam had been a guest faculty and choreographer at numerous schools and universities, and is presently teaching at Brown University, and is guest choreographer at both Manhattanville college and Hoftra University.

About the choreographer : Marlies Yearby received a 1996 Tony Award nomination for Best Choreography for Rent. Theater commissions include American Music Theatre Festival, Penumbra Theater, National Black Arts Festival, En Garde Arts, American Center (France). She has collaborated with playwrights Shay Youngblood, Laurie Carlos, Sekou Sundiata, Carl Hancock Rux, and Robbie McCauley. As founder/artistic director of Movin' Spirits Dance Theater, commissions include Lincoln Center, American Dance Festival, Jacob's Pillow, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, and Performance Space 122. Ms. Yearby received a '95 New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) for choreography for Lisa Jones' and Alva Rogers' Stained.
