
Great Performances brings internationally known performing artists to Southern Rhode Island. Prices are usually substantially lower than at up-state venues. There's not much dance, but thanks to Roxana Tourigny, their dance-saavy director, what does come in is first rate. See the schedule below for dates and times.

Rebel Baroque Orchestra L'Estro Armonico

L'Estro Armonico, or 'musical inspiration', the title of Antonio Vivaldi's brilliant opus 3 aptly describes an exuberant
and colorful extravaganza of rarely performed concerti for trumpet and multiple violins. For this event the orchestra includes trumpet, 4 violins, 2 violas, cello, bass, theorbo & harpsichord. Works by
Telemann, Valentini, Ragazzi, Stradella and Vivaldi are also featured in this performance.

The Rose Ensemble Oli and Mele
Retracing the Path of Early Hawaiian Vocal Tradition
Time: 8pm

Through Music, movement and narration, this touching presentation honors the Hawaiians' struggle to keep alive
the rich musical and cultural traditions nearly eradicated by the arrival of Captain Cook and the American
missionaries. It features haunting ancient Hawaiian chants (oli and mele), fun-loving cowboy
songs (paniolo) and gorgeous compositions by Queen Lili'uokalani (and other Hawaiian monarchs)
in addition to an impressive array of traditional Hawaiian musical instruments. The Rose Ensemble members
use musical examples to illustrate important time periods and basic element of language, instruments and musical styles.

Aureole Trio with guest percussionist Gregg Charest

Aureole's unique and colorful blend of flute, viola, and harp has captivated audiences around the world. For this performance, Rhode Island native and URI graduate, percussionist Gregg Charest will join the trio for some Hispanic music.

Shamou, The Legendary Persian Percussionist Assisted by Annegret Baier

In collaboration with the URI Jazz & World Music Festival
Shamou's drumming career began at an early age in his native Iran. He began his formal music training in Tehran, studied with teachers from the Royal College of Music in London and completed his training at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

The Cashore Marionettes take the audience on a journey that celebrates the richness of life. Life in Motion is recommended for adults and young adults.

Grand Derangement

Where Acadian song, dance and theater ignite the stage. The bow fires up the fiddle...the sparks fly...the audience can't sit still! The name refers to the expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia in 1766, but it also alludes to the group wanting to rouse its audience. This is an Encore performance.
