Author Michael Frayn stood backstage watching one of his own comedies and realized that "...it was funnier from behind than in front...". He resolved to write a play that would present the backstage antics of a troupe of actors. This is exactly what we get in Noises Off - both in front and behind the curtain - except that this troupe of actors is headed for chaos on-stage when their 'real' lives blur with the slapstick and split-second timing of their roles in the play-within-a-play. Rarely has mayhem on stage been so hilarious, and New York Times critic Frank Rich wrote that ">Noises Off is, was, and probably always will be the funniest play written in my lifetime". Winner of the Evening Standard Award for best comedy in the UK, and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble in New York.

A Student Directed Production
In this age of identity theft and social networking websites, this play has extra significance for anyone who has felt that prickle on the back of the neck of someone watching you. A frightening story of a blind date gone wrong.

Three sumptuously dressed kings knock at the door of a hut near Bethlehem where the beggar Amahl lives with his mother. The kings ask for a place to rest as they travel to pay homage to a wondrous child whose birth has been heralded by a bright star. The royal gifts they carry tempt Amahl's mother, who wants her child to have a better life than begging can offer. But when Amahl instead offers his one possession of value to the kings, he and his mother receive more in return than they could have hoped for. Gian-Carlo Menotti's one-act opera was commissioned by NBC specifically for television, and premiered as a live broadcast in 1951; although often described as an opera for children, this lyrical work is a sophisticated story of faith for all.

JANUARY 2008

Agnes of God
Providence College
Angell Blackfriars Theatre

The duality of the spiritual and rational life is embodied in the story of Agnes, a novice nun blessed with the voice of an angel who has secretly given birth to a child. Her naive manner adds to the mystery surrounding her pregnancy, and an investigation begins which brings the secular world into the convent where Agnes has been since the death of her mother. Agnes's guilt or innocence, and even the essential "how" of her situation are in the hands of a psychiatrist who believes Agnes can be analyzed and cured, and the convent's Mother Superior, whose faith in miracles extends to the novice under her care and protection. First staged at the O'Neill National Playwrights' Conference, Agnes of God won the 1979 Great American Play Contest, and then moved to Broadway for a long and successful run.

A Student Directed Production
Just a glimpse of a pair of wayward undergarments is enough to ruin a career, a marriage, a country, a king. Or is it? Martin's adaptation of satirist Sternheim's 1910 comedy suggests that the opposite might be just as true - that same glimpse could bring fame, fortune, love, and liberation. Decide for yourself - if you can stop laughing

Vaudeville performer Fanny Brice tells us her life in flashback, beginning when she was an awkward but aspiring teenager struggling to find work. She eventually lands her first role, and then quickly moves on to become a comedic star with celebrity status. But her private life takes a more sober turn as her handsome lover, and later husband, involves her in his less-than-successful business ventures, and Fanny must choose between the man she loves and her livelihood on the stage. FUNNY GIRL was nominated for 8 Tony Awards in 1964, and when made into a film four years later (both starring Barbra Streisand) it garnered 8 Academy Award nominations as well. Notable songs include Don't Rain on My Parade, People, and You are Woman.
