Part of Newport in the Jazz Age
Newport's resident contemporary ballet company returns to the magnificent surroundings of the Preservation Society's Rosecliff mansion in a special performance as part of the city wide festival, Newport in the Jazz Age. The Company will perform Deconstructing Cole Porter, a ballet by Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen set to the master's music. The ballet features the eight dancers of the Island Moving Co. in duets and group pieces which capture the range of emotion in Porter's familiar songs, which include Night and Day, Get Out of Town and It Was Just One of Those Things. The piece is accompanied by slides taken from photographs loaned to the Company by the Preservation Society and many Newport denizens, depicting the lavish parties which took place in Newport's social heyday.
The performance also includes Eva Marie Pacheco's Je Ne Regrette Rien, a dance for three choreographed to Edith Piaf songs. Eva Marie Pacheco, Michael Bolger and David Lawrence dance in what the Providence Phoenix called "a wary Gallic rebuttal" to the romance of the Cole Porter ballet.
General admission to the Rosecliff evening is $35. The Preservation Society offers the evening as a fundraiser for the Company, with $100 seats at tables in the Golden Circle closest to the stage.
