JULY 16,17 & 21-24, 2004 at 630pm

Newport's Island Moving Co. will take the stage at Flight of Steps, the Company's outdoor dance series at Fort Adams for six performances. This year the Company hosts two guest companies from California on July 16 & 17th and presents a program of new works showcasing the talents of Company members and guest choreographers July 21 thru 24th. All shows begin at 6:30 pm.

The Company welcomes California's Brockus Dance Project in the second half of a performance trade which brought Island Moving Co. to Los Angeles this past April. Artistic Director Deborah Brockus shows her diverse company of seven dancers in three works she has choreographed. Ruby Karen and Miguel Banket perform in Brockus' Love Duet from Quest to music by Drum Spririt. The entire company, including Andrea Marblestone, Claudia Wachs, Ronaldo Bowins, Ken Morris and Brockus herself, will dance in Phoenix and the moving Clouds, which is performed to sections of Dvorak's Symphony No. 5.

The program includes two pieces by choreographer Colin Connor, created for himself and Deborah Noble as the Connor/Noble Dance Company. Guitarist Alexander Sacks also travels from Los Angeles to perform with Deborah Noble in Obsolete Graces, which features the music of Henry Purcell performed on electric guitar. Noble and Connor perform together in Vestiges, to music by Michael Nyman.

Colin Connor also contributes a new work to the Island Moving Co. this summer, reworking and setting his Rose Garden on the Company's dancers and guest artist Mary Beth Murphy. Rose Garden is a dramatic and comic piece danced to Spanish madrigals. It will join Connor's popular Recent Arrivals, choreographed in 2002, in the Company repertoire. The Island Moving Co. will close the first weekend with a performance of Surrender, Miki Ohlsenís dramatic full company ballet which premiered at last summerís Flight of Steps

The program for June 21-26th also includes Miki Ohlsen's stunning Surrender, closing with its "incredibly powerful pas de deux" (Providence Phoenix) danced by Eva Marie Pacheco and Rolando Troconis. Alejandro Gomez, IMC dancer, reworks his infectious, Gipsy King ballet, Patio Andaluz, for five dancers and Michael Bolger choreographs a new trio for the Company. The Company also dances from here to there, which was choreographed for the Company's first New York season by Carol Somers in 2002.
