Brown University Fall Dance Concert

Doing Their Own Thing

The Fall concert is where Brown University dance students get to show their stuff in performance, choreography, and stage craft. Yes, this show is often ragged, and often has adult themes (and therefore is not child friendly), but is worth seeing for what some of the country's best young brains have created. Ashamu is a tiny theatre so get your tickets now, they are usually sold out before you get to the door.

Concert line-up

Do It
Choreographer: Sarah Filman
Because doing it softer, worse, slower, and weaker just doesn't really cut it.

Kish-Bish
Choreographer: Julia Vazquez, with help from Nandini Jayakrishna and Shruti Parekh
Kish-Bish (Hindi for mish-mash) is a piece that celebrates East-West cultural exchanges by combining South Asian and Western styles of music and dance in new and interesting ways. This piece was meant to be a lot of fun, so enjoy it!

Get Your Drink On
Choreographer: Tiffany Chen
The Chinese cup dance is a dance that is native to Inner Mongolia. After eating and drinking at a great feast, people would use the small wine glasses on the table, two in each hand, to dance and to make different sounds in an expression of happiness. This piece combines the movement of a Chinese cup dance with contemporary hip hop in a celebration of traditional and modern as well as east and west. It's a piece about transition, adaptation, and rice wine.

Guajiras Portrait
Choreographer: Patra Jongjitirat

Muksh
Choreographer and Dancer: Lana Zaman
A classical Indian dance in the style of Odissi. The dance was traditionally performed by devdassis, women who devoted their lives to the worship of the Hindu gods and goddesses and danced in the temples in their honor.

Shakin
Choreographer: Rachel Forman

Maybe, You'll Save Me
Choreographer: Sofia Bengoa

And all the roads that lead to you were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
I don't know how
I said maybe, You're gonna be the one who saves me?
And after all, You're my wonderwall

Don't Tell Mama
Choreographer: Ashley Chung
A musical theater influenced jazz piece full of deception, scandal and threats. Don't worry though. It's not that serious. Welcome to the Kit Kat Klub and have a good time.

The Lament of Gilgamesh
Choreography Class

The Statue at Czarskoe-Selo
Choreographer: Autumn Graham
Concept by Nora Blackall
The Statue at Czarskoe-Selo - Cesar Cui & Alexander Pushkin

Can't Get Next to You
Choreographer: Julie Siwicki
Motown tunes make me wanna boogie

A New Understanding
Choreographer and Dancer: Dianna Anderson
A tribute to dance instructor and mentor James

RAQS SHARQI (Belly Dance)
Choreographers: Shira Adler, Afshan Ajmiri

Raqs sharqi, better know as Belly Dance in the Western world, is the term for a dance style originating in the Middle East and other Arab-influenced areas. It includes an array of regional dances and music originating from various countries, including Spanish gypsies, North African tribes, and various traditional Indian dances. At present, belly dancing has expanded worldwide and has greatly influenced the dance styles of the western world. Today we take you on a journey to a time of genies and folk tales, black magic, and old world gypsies and mystics.
