Will the Grandfather of Television Competition Shows Straighten Up and Fly Right?

Last fall, top ballroom dancers competed at the world's largest ballroom dancing competition, The Ohio Star Ball in Columbus Ohio. America's Ballroom Challenge takes viewers behind the scenes of this stellar event as 24 top ranked couples compete for a dance title created just for this performance.

The length of the show has been expanded to five hour long episodes. American style smooth and rhythm and International's standard and latin all get their own hour.

The first four episodes begin with six finalist couples competing together on the dance floor in each category. Then each couple performs a show dance solo. The hour ends with the crowning of one couple, the champions in that style of dance.

In the fifth and final episode, the four champion couples compete across dance styles in a grand finale, performing two solos each. At the conclusion of five grueling hours of competition, an international panel of judges makes its decision. Only one couple will be named America's best.

ABC's Past & Present

America's Ballroom Challenge was an annual event on WGBH way before Dancing with the Stars was even a glimmer in its producer's eye. Latin champion Ron Montez and the late actress & dancer Juliet Prowse were the hosts and it was reasonably intelligent, instructive and a bit hokey.

In 2001, WGBH cancelled the show supposedly in order to put its money toward 9/11 coverage. The show returned last year after the phenomenal success of Dancing With The Stars.

Although they tried to update the 2006 show, the producers only succeeded in making the show even hokier and less instructive. The personable actress Marilu Henner (The Celebrity Host) drowned in an ocean of insincere scripted chatter and the former US Latin dance champion Tony Meredith (The Expert Host) sounded exactly like Ron Montez. Mr Montez was a fine host, but if you want Ron Montez, hire him, if you hire Mr Meredith, let him be himself. (By the way, Ron popped up as one of the choreographers on last season's So You Think You can Dance)

Even worse, unlike the original host, Mr.Meredith was apparently forced to mouth banalities and untruths about the performances. It was all wonderful no matter what miserable dancing the home audience could clearly see.

We can only hope that this year, Tony will talk like Tony and the truth will out.
