Note From riDance
If you are a serious dancer and have never auditioned and never seen So You Think You Can Dance, here are a few suggestions to avoid making a fool of yourself on national TV.
- Can you honestly say that you have studied and practiced dance for at least the last three years? Do you take classes at least 3 times a week and practice at least as much? If you answered no to the above, don't expect to get through the audition process. The top fifty on this show know the meaning of discipline and hard work. Everyone else is camera fodder for a mock fest.
- If you don't take lessons but you dance passionately, ask someone who knows dance and to whom you are not related (or dating) to give you an honest opinion about your dancing. Be prepared to pay someone for this. If they think you aren't good enough, listen. If they think you are good enough, be aware that you are going up against TRAINED dancers and that you will be asked to dance formal styles, jazz, ballroom and hip hop. If you get through the audition, you won't know the terminology that the choreographers use (plie, passe, grand developpe etc etc etc) nor many of the movements, you will not be able to keep up.
- If you do not have performance or audition experience, get friends and their friends (strangers) to watch you dance, so you can get over some of the stage fright. Dancing in class and for yourself is not as difficult as performance. If you don't have enough time to do this, get in as many group or private Authentic Movement classes as you can. (Authentic Movement sounds weird but it is an amazingly effective way to become comfortable with people watching you.)
- Prior to the audition, do not brag about your dancing prowess. The people who end up winning, never brag; they know how hard it is to get through an audition. Remember - You are on camera.
- If you end up at the audition and the judges excoriate you, be polite and well mannered. You are on camera. The video from your performance could end up on You Tube or any number of other places. It could easily stay on the internet for years. Future possible employers, dance or not, will be able to see how you behave under pressure. Treat every aspect of this event like an audition for a future job.
- Take what the judges say and do your homework - get lessons from good teachers.
