OFF THE RECORD SWING

Providence, RI 02912
Information 419-957-3754
Email: M_K@offtherecordswing.com
Website: http://www.offtherecordswing.com
Website: http://www.brown.edu/Students/Swing_Club
Instructors: Mike Lai & Kate Marckworth

Thursday Nights at Brown University
Price: Free

Mike and Kate have been teaching swing at Brown University for the past two years, and are a fresh, high-energy presence in the Massachusetts/Rhode Island swing community. As a pair they are known for their clear, concise instruction, ability to break down movement, and their humor and chemistry on the dance floor. Mike and Kate have their roots in smooth-style Lindy, emphasizing lead-follow interaction and musicality.

Their Balboa, a primary focus and passion, is strongly influenced by Marty Lau and Jen Urich, and the stylings of old-time Balboa great, Willie Desatoff. Mike and Kate will continue as instructors at Brown, as well as teach Lindyhop and Balboa classes in Providence. Look for them at ALHC, Eastern Balboa Championships, Swing Out Northwest, Boston Tea Party, Midwest Balboa Championships, and any other stuff that fits in Kate's busy college schedule (Mike doesn't have a life).

BALBOA
Done hip-to-hip, and cheek-to-cheek, this smooth 8 count swing dance originated in Southern California at a time when the ballroom floors were overcrowded, and breakaways and large movements were banned. It consists of subtle, intricate footwork, and comes in two forms: pure Balboa, which is done in closed position, and Bal-swing, which includes throwouts and other open position elements. The dance's economy of movement makes it very well suited to fast tempo music, however, Balboa has always been done to music of all tempos.
