JUNE 22 DANCE NEEDS MUSIC

"It takes a performance as thrillingly alive as the one given by 16 of the school's musicians on Thursday night to underline how much power is drained from many dance concerts through recorded or indifferently played compositions. Martha Graham’s works are not dances that can afford such drainage, especially in 2007; either they sweep you up fully, brooking no resistance, or leave you snickering in a wake of overwrought archetypes and erotic intensity.
Thankfully, there was more sweeping than snickering at the Shubert Theater here, where the troupe performed as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas. Credit the dance company's conductor, Aaron Sherber, and the fine musicians, whose presence was far larger than their numbers."

JUNE 11 BILL T JONES TAKES HOME A TONY
As befits a dancer, an exultant Bill T Jones was the only winner who eschewed the stairs and leaped directly to the stage at the Tony Awards. He took the choreography award for his work in Spring Awakening, and unlike his usual intensely serious public demeanor, last night he was all smiles. JUNE 8 THE BIG APPLE'S ARCHAIC DANCE LAW
If you had to name a city in the U.S. that has banned most social dancing, your answer would probably not be New York City - that bastion of cosmopolitan liberality and civil rights. But, in fact, New York has an eighty year old prohibition against social dancing in any business without a dance license, and that license is hard to get. Once ignored, the law is now enforced much to the dismay of swing, salsa and tango dancers (among many others). Last February, New York's appeals court ruled that the law was valid and on May 19, several thousand irate dancers took to the streets in protest and they protested by dancing.
According to the state Appellate Division, "Recreational dancing is not a form of expression protected by the federal or state constitutions." However Barbara Ehrenreich, the author of Dancing in the Streets: A History of Collective Joy , makes a case for dance as a communal bonding tool of the highest importance as well as a sop for depression (maybe the main reason for depression is an individual's disconnected-ness from society). In last Sunday's New York Times, she makes an impassioned call to arms (or legs in the case of dance) and advises dancers to continue to protest by dancing through the streets. JUNE 5 DANCESTRAVAGANZA JUNE'S ONLY MODERN DANCE CONCERT IS THIS WEEKEND
June is usually a down month for dance performance. Most dance people are working on studio recitals and have no time for their own work. So this June is a one event month, and that event is coming up this Friday and Saturday in the form of Dancestravaganza, the brainchild of Tim Rubel, artistic director of The Theatre Expansion. Tim is all about the integration of dance into theatre, but he is also excited by dance for its own sake. As with most of the younger choreographers, Tim's concept of dance incorporates many movement forms and every year he invites a wide variety of styles to join him in putting on an exciting mix of dance. JUNE 3 MISHA & DUKE TAKE HOME A PELL AWARD

Festival Ballet Providence's Artistic Director Misha Djuric was awarded the Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts at last night's 2007 Pell Awards Gala at Trinity Rep. As artistic director of Festival Ballet Providence, he has created over 38 original works and has fostered the development of many choreographers. In a classic case of benevolent 'what goes around, comes around', Festival Ballet has reaped the benefits with many new exciting productions - often rivaling what New York and Boston.
Swing and blues dancers all over the world know musician Duke Robellaird, who was awarded the Rhode Island Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts. His successful musical career has spanned three decades and has earned him numerous awards and accolades. Duke started on his professional musical journey at seventeen with the formation of the now legendary Roomful of Blues. He led that group as singer, guitarist, songwriter and front man for a dozen years and two albums.
The Pell Awards' criteria include excellence in the artist's chosen field; work that significantly advances the art form; and contribution to the betterment of the community and the world at large through artistic presence and community service. JUNE 2 FREAK ACCIDENT ENDS DANCER'S CAREER AT STREB
The Streb Dance company performed at PPAC last fall as part of First Works.
"Performers in the dance company Streb Extreme Action fling themselves against plexiglass or sail off a trampoline and land facedown on a mat. They yank themselves around on ropes and dodge swinging cinder blocks...and a company motto is 'Dance, Danger, Action!' Such high-octane movement risks serious injury, and two weeks ago it happened. The Streb dancer deeAnn Nelson, 28, landed hard on her back during a performance of a work called Surface and crushed a vertebra. She underwent surgery and now has a metal rod permanently embedded in her back, ending her career with the company but not, she hopes, in dance."
Strangely, the accident, which occurred on a relatively easy stunt, was the worst yet suffered by this daring company. Our society has many culturally acceptable outlets for extreme risk-taking behaviors and dance is definately one of them. As choreographers work on the cutting edge of movement, they ask more and more from their dancers. And the question remains, is it acceptable to ask people to risk their careers (and their lives) on an art form?
