TAKE THE LEAD MASHUP
Mash ups are video versions of musical mixes often using 'borrowed' movie trailers. New Line Cinema, the distributors of Take the Lead, has commissioned the first official movie mashup. You can see it at Wired magazine on line http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,70771-0.html?tw=wn_tophead_25.

Meanwhile the movie is pretty much gone from the first run movie houses and should be arriving on DVD in a couple months.

Inspired by the true story of internationally acclaimed ballroom dancer Pierre Dulane, Take The Lead stars Antonio Banderas as an ex-professional dancer who volunteers to teach dance in the New York City public school system. As usual Hollywood can't be bothered to provide a decent coherent script, but the excellent actors make this movie quite enjoyable. Pierre Dulane was also featured in the hit Slamdance festival documentary Mad Hot Ballroom (now available on video and DVD) where you can see a more realistic (and far more inspiring) presentation of low income young people slogging through their ballroom dance classes. MARCH 2006

BARNEY'S CLOSES AFTER 18 YEARS
Danny & Lois Kaplan, closed their store, Barney's Bagels in late March. The bagels from Barney's had become a state-wide phenomenon with over 300 bakeries and stores selling the chewy rounds. Unlike many other bagels which have become softer and softer until they resemble white bread in bagel shape (Dunkin Donuts ersatz 'bagels' come to mind), Barney's Bagels retained the original concept of a hearty bagel while still venturing into new flavors. Barney's is another victim of Rhode island's arcane food sales tax laws, and the demise of Barney's has led to the state's renewed interest in addressing the problem. Danny still teaches for The Dancin' Feelin' in Warwick and he an Lois can be found at many local ballroom dances.
